You wrote the book. Don’t tank the launch. These are the mistakes that still wreck indie releases—and exactly how to dodge them.
1) Publishing your first (or second) draft
Blunder: Uploading too fast.
Fix: Get real feedback before money hits the “Publish” button. Use structured beta reads or critique swaps (Scribophile, Critique Circle) to catch blind spots early. scribophile.comcritiquecircle.com
2) Skipping professional editing and cover design
Blunder: “My cousin knows Canva.”
Fix: Pay for the right edit (developmental → line/copy → proof) and a pro cover that fits genre conventions. Readers judge the package in seconds.
3) Mangling your metadata
Blunder: Wrong categories/keywords, keyword stuffing, vague descriptions.
Fix:
- Pick up to 3 accurate KDP categories per format.
- Fill all 7 keyword boxes with phrases readers actually search.
- Keep titles and subtitles clean (no keyword soup). Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing+1
4) Ignoring KDP policy changes (and getting dinged)
Blunder: Uploading like it’s 2022.
Fix: Know the 2025 rules that hit indies every day:
- AI content disclosure: If any text/images/translations are AI-generated, you must tell KDP at upload. AI-assisted (you wrote it; tool helped) doesn’t need disclosure. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing
- Print preorders: eBooks can be pre-ordered up to a year; print can’t—you can only schedule a release (5–90 days out). Plan accordingly. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing+1
- KDP Select exclusivity: KU enrollment is 90 days and exclusive for the eBook during the term. Opt-out if you plan to go wide. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing+1
- Print royalties/pricing (2025 update): KDP changed royalty treatment for some lower-priced print books and adjusted color print costs—double-check current thresholds before you price. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing+1
5) Treating ISBNs like an afterthought
Blunder: Using whatever’s free without understanding tradeoffs.
Fix: If you want to be publisher of record and keep the ISBN portable across platforms, buy your own from Bowker (MyIdentifiers) in the U.S. Free KDP ISBNs work—just know they’re KDP-only and show “Independently published” as the imprint. Amazon Kindle Direct PublishingMyIdentifiers
6) Locking yourself into the wrong distribution
Blunder: Hitting Publish everywhere without a plan.
Fix: Decide before upload:
- Amazon-only + KDP Select (good for KU-heavy genres), or
- Wide via KDP print/eBook plus IngramSpark for bookstore/library reach (free to create an account and upload titles; review current pricing/returns terms). Amazon Kindle Direct PublishingIngramSpark
7) Playing games with reviews (and getting punished)
Blunder: “Leave a 5-star review and I’ll send you a gift card.”
Fix: Don’t incentivize or filter for positive reviews. Amazon bans review manipulation, and the FTC’s 2024 rule lets them penalize fake or deceptive reviews (including AI-generated and insider reviews without disclosure). Keep your asks neutral and compliant. AmazonFederal Trade Commission+1
8) Launching with zero runway
Blunder: Uploading on Friday and announcing on Saturday.
Fix: Give yourself 8–12 weeks: lock edits and covers, set the eBook preorder, schedule the print release, line up ARC readers (NetGalley, Reedsy Discovery or genre reviewers), and build your email/social drip. Amazon Kindle Direct PublishingNetGalleyReedsy
9) Neglecting your Amazon real estate
Blunder: Bare pages and bland listings.
Fix:
- Author Central: Claim your author page, link all titles, and add editorial reviews.
- A+ Content: Add comparison charts, image modules, and series info to your product page. It boosts conversion when done well. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing+1
10) Formatting like a Word doc
Blunder: Rivers of text, widows/orphans, junk TOC.
Fix: Use pro formatting (Vellum/Atticus/InDesign or a formatter). Clean interiors signal quality as strongly as a good cover.
